… I have a Spock action figure.
Dudes, I took him out of his box, because I didn’t buy him for the potential zillions of dollars future generations might be able to reap from having a NIB Star Trek Movie Action Figure. I bought him to sit – well stand, really – on my desk holding his phaser at the ready. In my mind, he’s ready to blast the shit outta anyone who annoys me. I tried to get him to kneel – picture the scene when Spock beams down to Vulcan despite the protests of pretty much everyone he rushes past on his way to the transporter – but he looked all akward, and the “man of action” effect was lost.
A lot of people asked me if I was going to start watching Heroes now, since I am such a huge fan of whatever-his-name-is-who-played-Spock-in-the-movie. Um, what? Who said I was a fan of that actor? I never said that. Clearly, these people who assumed that my fan-of-Spock-ness would transfer into fan-of-the-actor-who-played-Spock-ness are not on the same wavelength as I am. Or maybe I am the only person who can LOVE a character without giving a flying fig about the actor who played him/her. That sounds harsh, I don’t mean that I harbour any negative feelings for the actor; more that I don’t know the actor. I mean, this is a guy who was paid money to do a job, the job happened to be acting a particular role. The thing is Zachary Quinto – yeah, I know I made it seem like I had no idea who the actor was, but he deserves his props, he did an excellent job – is not actually Spock. Now, if I was given the opportunity to get to know Zachary Quinto, maybe I would end up also loving him, maybe even as much as I love Spock.
Anyways, I would think that actors would appreciate fans who are able to draw a distinction between them as people and the characters they portray. Particularly, actors who played snotty know-it-all teenagers back in the late 80’s. Or deranged serial killers last fall. Or really any less-than-savory role, somebody HAS to play the villain (or the dweeb – think of that Urkel kid). Don’t hate the player, hate the game – or in this case, hate the role.
On another – slightly related – note, JMar told me the other day that Christopher Walken was on some list of most unattractive actors or some crap. WTF?!? Christopher Walken is definitely creepy-seeming, but he’s not ugly. Holy Cow people who wrote this list, what’s the deal?!?
Just for fun, here’s a list of other characters I love (in no partcular order) - I’m not going to tell you where they are from, you either love the same stuff as I do, or you don’t:
- Dr Rodney McKay
- Kaylee Frye
- Mr Vincent Nigel-Murray
- Lindsay Weir
- The Doctor (10th incarnation)
- Veronica Mars
- Harry Kim
This is in no way a complete list.
